Hudson soft Adventure Island

Post by Yami »

I remeber when I alert about this one on the old board, it was on its old video box cover where the hero goes from iland to island to rescue his girlfriend from monsters. Well on the cover the woman was held in the monsters hand gagged with a cleve gag.

Not many of you guys liked this alert on account the damsel was a bit chubby looking.

Don't remember this alert at all but yeah there we go:
http://images.wikia.com/nintendo/en/ima ... _cover.png" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.coverbrowser.com/image/game- ... es/2-1.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And she certainly isn't chubby but it seems that just about every version of the box art has her partially covered by some type of sticker or starburst message. Quite annoying.

Oh heck yeah, this was my favorite video game box/cartridge art way back in the day when I'd play this game on the NES. Still remember the first time I went into the store where I used to rent games in my youth and the thrill of seeing this sexy island princess bound and gagged on the cover. Needless to say, there was no doubt I had to rent that game that day! :D The chick's name in this first game is either Princess Tina or Princess Lei-Lani BTW. I forget which. Oh, and the big rhino villain is King Quiller.

And for those who don't know, the artist for this cover art is the extraordinary Susumu Matsushita. Probably my favorite mainstream artist on the planet. Not only did he do the cover art for most of the Takahashi Meijin/Adventure Island games, but he was also the longtime cover artist for the popular gaming magazine Famitsu Weekly in Japan. More recently, he did the character artwork for the Maximo games on PS2. Remember those sexy sorceresses? :D He's had a really robust career and worked on tons of projects though, not just video games. His airbrush art style is really distinctive and once you know the look of his characters it's hard to mistake for anyone else's. I actually have one of his artbooks from Japan that's got lots of great works from him. No matter what he draws, whether it's hot chicks (and yes, he's damn good at them), cartoony animals, or scary/humorous monsters, his art is always top-notch.

If you like his style, I'd highly recommend a visit to his official website: http://www.susumumatsushita.net/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

BTW, Naomi Grace (http://naomigrace.way-nifty.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) is Susumu's wife, who's a jazz singer in Japan. She's half-Japanese/half-Caucasian American and pretty good lookin'. Susumu even draws her in his cartoonized art style sometimes. He is one lucky bastard isn't he? ;)

The back of the box calls her Princess Leilani, but she's actually Tropical Tina (Just Tina in the games). Only Adventure Island 2 referred to her correctly.

EDIT: My bad, Super Adventure island 2 actually refers to her in the intro by her full name.

I did some cut-rate gag edits back in the day from the one time you see her tied up in the game. I'll try to locate those and post 'em for nostalgia's sake.

EDIT 2: Found 'em.

OTN - http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v319/ ... naGag2.gif" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Ball - http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v319/ ... naGag3.gif" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Tape - http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v319/ ... naGag4.gif" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And lastly, cleave - http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v319/ ... naGag5.gif" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Like I said, they're cut-rate, done on a computer that was, at the time, about 8 years old. The only editing program I had on there was MSPaint. I did other sprite gag edits, but they, too, are crap.
