RIP Gary Owens..

Post by cresent34 »

Learned about his just now:

Radio, TV and voiceover performer Gary Owens died on Feb. 12 at his home in the Encino neighborhood of Los Angeles. Owens, who was 80, had been a diabetic since the age of 8.

Owens was probably best known as the announcer on NBC’s “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In” (1968-73), with his trademark hand-over-the-ear announcing style. On the show, John Wayne once imitated Owens announcing. The phrase Gary created on his KMPC radio show, “Beautiful downtown Burbank,” later became a nightly catchphrase on Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show.”

Gary Owens was a key part to Laugh In as the humorous link between sketches. He was also the voice of Space Ghost in the original 1966 series, and Blue Falcon in the '80s Dynomutt cartoons. Sad to see him go.

He made Space Quest a little more entertaining in IV and was the only actor with talent in SQ6. It's sad to see him go. I liked his work.

Wasn't Dynomutt a '70s cartoon?

I remember when he did commercials for Del Taco (Itsy bitsy burritos, cheap cheap cheap), not to mention the Natural Light beer commercials on the radio.
