Marvel never makes is easy for mutants, and coming this January there appears to be a new danger with an old name: No More Mutants.
Friday morning at the conclusion of Marvel’s “Retailer Exclusive: Meet MARVEL!” panel at New York Comic Con, the publisher posted a teaser slide featuring artwork showing the sibling mutants Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch caught in a red-ish spotlight with the title “No More Mutants” behind them with the date January 2015, according to a retailer in attendance who supplied us the image...
... Taken on face value, the teaser could further suggest Marvel is deemphasizing the entire mutant-half of their universe. Back in June during a panel at the Phoenix Comic Con, longtime X-Men writer Chris Claremont said that Marvel's X-Men books are "forbidden to create new characters." Claremont attributed this to the fact that per Fox's ownership of the X-Men movie rights, any characters created in an X-Men book become property, for the purposes of movies, to Fox and not Marvel and their burgeoning film business.
Despite Marvel declining to comment on Claremont’s claim, new mutant characters have been created in recent X-Men titles. A new mutant named Rico was introduced by Claremont himself in Nightcrawler #1 earlier this year, and the Uncanny X-Men series has featured a number of new mutant characters -- one of which, Eva Bell, is the main character in its upcoming Annual.
So should X-Men fans be worried? Newsarama has learned they can likely breathe easy.
We caught up with X-Men executive editor Mike Marts at NYCC and asked about the teaser and he assured us his corner of the Marvel Universe isn’t going away.
"No More Mutants" isn’t even an X-Men event, but an Avengers story, he told us. The story is “growing out of the events of [their current event] Axis,” according to Marvel editor and Senior Vice President of Publishing Tom Brevoort, who was also on hand to clarify.
