Yes Yami, they're trying anything for Broadway...
“Rio” is headed to Broadway.
Concert promoter turned Broadway producer Michael Cohl, whose Broadway show “Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark” closed last winter after a spectacularly troubled three-year run, has signed licensing deals with Twentieth Century Fox to create live theater versions of two of the studio’s titles: “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked” and “Rio,” he said.
“I just picked up the phone one day and we started talking, and after a long courtship, longer than my girlfriend and I, it worked out,” said Cohl.
“Alvin” will be a family-oriented live show that will tour theaters throughout the country, launching this winter, said Cohl. A live theatrical version of “Rio” will open in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to coincide with the start of the 2016 Olympics in Rio, he said. He said he plans to bring that show, which he called “Fox’s “Lion King” — a reference to Disney’s mega hit Broadway musical — to Broadway after that.

This kinda makes sense since recently The Lion King Musical became the biggest entertainment media-oriented money maker ever. Against Everything. Including Cameron's Avatar.

The typo "Chimpunks" got me interested in the concept of Chipmunks going punk; now I'm sorely disappointed. Granted, a mere music genre change wouldn't make the movies any less garbage.
