Disney CEO Bob Iger said today that the Hollywood giant plans on making a series of new spin-off films based on existing "Star Wars" characters.
These new films would be in addition to the forthcoming "Episode VII" that is slated for a possible 2015 release (and which will be directed by "Star Trek" director J.J. Abrams), and two subsequent full "Star Wars" sequels.
Iger revealed the news in an interview on CNBC today, explaining that the spin-off films will be produced alongside the full "Star Wars" sequels. He would not say which characters will be featured in the stand-alone movies, but one can speculate that Yoda would be an obvious choice. Other good choices would be Han Solo or Princess Leia. Disney and LucasFilm could even decide to give Luke Skywalker his own film, although one could argue that that's already been done. And, of course, there are dozens of other compelling characters in the "Star Wars" universe.
"We still plan to make 'Star Wars' [episodes] seven, eight, and nine roughly over a six-year period of time starting in 2015," Iger said, "but there are going to be a few other films released in that period of time too."
Iger also said that news of the spin-off films would be big for "Star Wars" fans because there will be more films for them to enjoy.
Disney bought LucasFilm for $4.05 billion in late October, and immediately confirmed that it would make new "Star Wars" films, the first of which was said to be released in 2015, though new LucasFilm boss Kathleen Kennedy has said she isn't sure that date is realistic. Last month, Disney and LucasFilm confirmed that J.J. Abrams had agreed to direct the next "Star Wars" film, but Iger did not address who would make the spin-offs. He did say, however, that Lawrence Kasdan (who wrote "The Empire Strikes Back") and producer Simon Kinberg would be "working on" the new movies.

Re: Disney's Star Wars Movie Spinoffs
ponders.
you know this could work if they decided to cover an earlier time in yoda's long years, when the republic itself was still young and so was he. or perhaps the events of the clone wars series will leave ahsoka alive and we could cover hell maybe even bring the storylines from the comics of star wars into the moving pictures. perhaps others as well...... hmmm.
it is true though. the star wars series does open for almost limited potential in story telling. whether dealign with the minds of droids, the technologies, the governemnts and wars, the lifeo f a bounty hunter, or the mysticisms of the force, the potential for stories is huge.
i will only buy this however if they make it animated and direct to dvd. the marvel animated movies are not half bad and i have always felt animation is the only thing that can capture the powers of the force appropriately.

Re: Disney's Star Wars Movie Spinoffs
eighty percent of star wars fans would crucify you if this actually happened.
albeit, i am not one of those major jar jar binks haters. i understand wht he was for, supposed to be a character who is NOt packing heat yet is an organic being (i mean, seriously, even your princesses and senators could blow your fucking head off in those old movies). but his execution, like much of the prequels, is lacking. more so, as he is not an adventurous type, there is no story to tell with him.
personally i want to see more unique and brand new characters be made and shown. hell, what i really want to see is a jedi fall from grace, hard, and have to struggle to regain what he or she once was. hell when i first played the star wars, nights of the old republic 2, that is what i did. what is awesome about that game is that is actually allowed me to do that. have my character be as sith like as can be, yet a moment happened, a defenseless someone in trouble, and something awoke inside of my character. strangely enough i did not realize that is what i did at first, i got quite immersed in it at that point.
okay, somebody has got to create a storyline like that. better done than vader's story though.
