CW's Wonder Woman series
We'll see if it'll do better than NBC's botched attempt...
First announced back in September, The CW is developing a new "Wonder Woman" pilot in the hopes of bringing the character back in a regular television series. Today, Deadline reveals that the new take on the DC Comics heroine may actually focus on a new iteration of Wonder Woman with a character named Iris.
The site managed to get their hands on a character description being used in the casting process. They note that the network is looking for particularly tall actresses to play the part, asking for those who audition to be 5'8" or taller...
...Allan Heinberg, who has written both "Wonder Woman" comics and the CW series "Gilmore Girls," has been tapped to write the script which bears the working title "Amazon..."
...As to why the show will follow Iris over the traditional Diana Prince remains to be seen, though it's a distinct possibility that the Prince version of the character is being held back for the upcoming Justice League feature film.

Re: CW's Wonder Woman series
Usually for these type of projects, they'll keep the real name underwraps so not a lot of people will swarm in to get the part. She'll be Diana, don't worry. My only gripe is that the plot point sounds way too much like Smallville.Suicide wrote:Iris??? O_o
Re: CW's Wonder Woman series
That's true the name sheet is usually changed. The prospect of Heinberg has it's ups. And I rather like the description of her character. Kinda reminds me of how she was in the Justice League animated series. One that's young to this world and not yet a diplomat. I'd be interested to know what direction they'd take her rogues gallery. I'd imagine they'd go the Greek Myth route more than her classic rogues, which would be a shame because I think her more comic book villains have real potential.

And the big guy at DC confirms that Amazon will star Diana on Twitter: http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/ ... s/?a=70694" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;Suicide wrote:That's true the name sheet is usually changed. I think the show has the potential to be something really great. I only hope they don't drag out her becoming Wonder Woman like they did Superman in Smallville. Plus, if they go the Greek route, I'd like them to use some elements from the Azzarello run. If they can get the right actress, this'll be pretty good.
Re: CW's Wonder Woman series
I absolutely LOVE Azzarello's run but I feel like they need to go the classic route for this. The Azzarello WW is so new it might be too unfamiliar. I think introducing her to a TV audience we need a spin the classic Diana rather than the current one.Plus, if they go the Greek route, I'd like them to use some elements from the Azzarello run.
Re: CW's Wonder Woman series
Smallville never had any interest for me, and if we have to watch a version of Diana that is not Wonder Woman for 10 seasons...I'll be passing this by and sticking with Arrow.

Re: CW's Wonder Woman series
Most people aren't going to be familiar with the mythos anyway. Her biggest exposure was the 70's show and obviously that was decades ago. I mean most people probably can't name any of her villains, except possibly the Cheetah.Suicide wrote:I absolutely LOVE Azzarello's run but I feel like they need to go the classic route for this. Re: CW's Wonder Woman series
Yeah but if you want FANS to bite you'll want to grab the more familiar context. And that certainly wouldn't be the one that only has 13 issues of lore.
Re: CW's Wonder Woman series
I think you can do both. Give the audience the adventure they want, but with more mythological depth. If people just kept being shoveled what they were used to Batman 89 or the Dark Knight would never have been made...Suicide wrote:Yeah but if you want FANS to bite you'll want to grab the more familiar context. Well the character has mythological routes beyond the current version. I'm not saying exclude that part, I just think it would be wiser to go with the more familiar version rather than the brand spanking new one that hasn't even got a grip in the culture yet.

There is not all that much difference between the two versions, except she is Zeus' daughter rather than a clay statue. I don't think the audience would mind if she had Greek divinity villains (which she had aplenty long before Azzarello, it was really Perez in the 80s that pushed the mythological angle hard) along with characters like Cheetah, the old series had only Nazis and run of the mill crooks, so unless you want to go back to that what we see in the new show will be unfamiliar to many.
Re: CW's Wonder Woman series
Except for Hippolyta, Ares, Apollo, Artemis, Hades, and the premise of her coming to our world being completely different iterations from Perez's run. There is not all that much difference between the two versions
And yes the golden age villains are exactly who I mean. Lots of them have been revamped in later versions. Dr. Psycho, Giganta, Cheetah, Baroness von Gunther, Circe, Dr. Poison, Queen Clea. The fun part about Smallville and Arrow are the new iterations on classic enemies, introducing them to a new audience that have other wise never heard of them. Each of these characters could easily be adapted with a Greek Mythology basis to their power and ability (I hear Cheetah has already had that done in the JLA comic).
I'm of the philosophy that taking and expanding the classic lore that exists with the character helps bring out the characters roots. "Iris's" character description is a really golden age take on Wonder Woman for a modern age. I just think it would be wasted potential to not introduce more of her golden age roots to a new audience with a new spin. Even if I absolutely ADORE the Greek God family in the current Wonder Woman run. And I will say that Azzerello's take on WW's bracelets is probably the best interpretation of a golden age trope I've ever read. I want more of that!
