Hairbreadth Harry was a farcical newspaper comic that first ran from 1906 until 1940. Most of the plots are unconnected and are most often about the villain Rudolf's absurd schemes to get the heroine Belinda to marry him and/or to kill her for refusing him, or Rudolf just being a menace in general. The hero Harry typically foils the villain by some improbable coincidence. Belinda is usually the damsel in distress, but actually she rescues Harry almost as often.
These are what that I found from the first artist. Often different papers ran the same story on different days, so some of the dates here might not be official.

That's pretty cute! I love the idea of all these silly little joke stories that just happen to have a woman tied up in them.
