The Superior Spider-Man Announced

Post by rider28031 »

If people didn't like Marvel NOW!, they'll hate it after this:

USA Today have revealed our first look at The Superior Spider-Man. The relaunched series will replace The Amazing Spider-Man after issue #700 hits stands on December 26th. Whatever happens in that landmark issue will result in a very new direction for Peter Parker, with the site describing it as, "a far darker Spider-Man than fans have ever seen." "The one thing that does not go with this Spider-Man is the term 'Friendly neighborhood,'" says series writer Dan Slott. "I've always been the omniscient hand that's been protecting Peter Parker and Spider-Man, and not letting anything too bad happen to him. And now I've become this cruel god. There's something exciting about that, about going, 'Mwah-ha-ha-ha-ha, here is what's going to happen to you, Spider-Man!' And it's drastic and it's big and it's exciting and it's never been done before."

This is crazy! I could accept a new volume of Amazing, but outright canceling it? I might just sound like a Spidey fanboy who's afraid of change, but Amazing has been around for 50 years! You can't just replace it. Why couldn't they replace Avenging Spiderman?

Copying DC, yeah thats a bad thing now. Hoping they don't get rid of Miles already, kid has really grown on me.

This is for the main Marvel Universe Peter Parker; Miles belongs to the Ultimate Universe. Plus, this isn't a reboot, it's supposed to be building off of the ending to Amazing Spider-Man #700. Also, I kinda consider DC the better comics company at the moment; have they screwed up, yes, but at least they kept the core of their characters instead of putting them in a direction that's against the character (for most at least).

UPDATE:

Apparently this Spider-Man isn't going to be Peter Parker at all, hence the darker Spidey, and that Mary-Jane will be his love interest... the new guy, not Peter...

Chances are it's going to be that kid they were pushing as Peter's sidekick just a few months back. I thought it seemed suspicious that they got rid of him after the massive promotional campaign they had for him.

Nobody can get away with getting rid of Peter, Peter is the original Spider-Man and will always be, this is going to cost them dearly, maybe I should move to the DC fandom.

The folks over at http://www.spidermancrawlspace.com/wordpress/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; are speculating that Doc OC will be the new Spider-Man trapped in Peter's body. Really I have no idea why Marvel is doing this now with their big Marvel Now! push. DC had the good sense to put Bruce back in the cape and cowl when they started the New 52, why throw out your most iconic character during the big unveiling of your new status quo. A lot of people will pick up the book thinking "hey I like Spider-Man, I wonder what he's up to?" or "Those movies are really fun, I'll check out the comics" and then suddenly "WTF no Peter Parker"? Claws? And he's dark and violent now???" I'm not apposed to screwing with your characters now and then (although I don't trust Slott's ability to pull it off any better than the last half dozen lame stories) but this just seems like bad timing.

And I agree with the store manager at my comic book store, Marvel seems to be trying to kill the collector's market with the constant name changes, and re-numberings every 10 or 20 issues. It'll be hell in the future for anyone trying to track down a complete run of a character.

Scary thing is that I had the exact same thought the other day, the ultimate revenge by Doc Ock; sorta like Kraven's Last Hunt (which I've heard of but never read). It just plain sucks that Marvel thinks they can do whatever the hell they want with their characters without thinking about what made the characters great for fans. Slott's a hack in my opinion, AVX screwed over a good chunk of the X-Men thanks to the success of the Avengers movie, the list goes on.

I'm seriously considering going the Linkara route and just quit not only Spidey comics, but Marvel in general; DC's definitely the better company right now. Did they mess up with the reboot? Yes. Screw some characters over? Definitely. But, hell, I give DC credit, at least they treat their characters much better than Marvel does right now.

The reboot convinced me to give up on pretty much everything DC puts out but their cartoons. The awful costumes, the rehashed 90's dreck, the stupid Superman/Wonder Woman relationship nonsense. Bleh.

At least with this new Spider-Man garbage I can safely ignore that one book.

And your new Superior Spider-Man is apparently..... MIGUEL O'HARA!

And straight from Slott's mouth too; he screwed up on Twitter. Any thoughts?

Honestly, I'm okay with this. They could have done something sooooooo much worse, like how there were rumors of Doc Ock being put in Peter's body. I just wonder how the hell they're gonna pull this off.

I'm actually a big fan of Spider-man 2099, so I'll be giving Superior Spider-man a shot if it really is Miguel.

...then again, I plan on giving it a shot one way or another. Whether or not I actually stay with it is something else entirely.
