Avengers 2: Casting for New Character

Post by ARNie »

I suppose this means one Avenger's name change was just to keep the trademark with Marvel...

Some big news came out this week when it comes to the upcoming "Avengers 2." While the movie is still three years away, casting is underway and the UK's Daily Mail announced on Oct. 6 that actresses Emily Blunt and Ruth Wilson are competing for a role.

The first "Avengers" movie featured two female hero characters in Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Cobie Smulders as S.H.I.E.L.D. operative Maria Hill. However, there have been many female heroes in the comic book team, the most iconic being The Wasp.

While The Wasp was an original member of the comic book version of the team, and a leader for the team for many years, that is not the character that these actresses are rumored to be reading for.

According to the Daily Mail, the two are up for the role of Ms. Marvel.

HuffPo is reporting that there might be some confusion and that in fact Blunt and Wilson are in contention for the lead female role in "Winter Soldier".

As far as Blunt or Wilson for Ms. Marvel, frankly I don't see it. Carol Danvers is the epitome of All-American gung-ho and not to disparage their abilities but I don't see either one of these English actors being able to pull that off. On the other hand...Jessica Drew does happen to be English. ;)

Technically...but she has berely lived there since she was 1 year old. That being said...I'd love to see Emily Blunt's face when they show her the costume she'd be wearing XD

I sincerely doubt Spider Woman will be appearing at all given that Sony has the rights to the Spider-Man franchise.

that would be technical, Spider-woman really has nothing to do with the Spider-man franchise.

That's not how trademarks generally work. For instance Fox owns the film rights to Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, despite the fact that they were only ever X-Men villains for a handful of issue and Scarlet Witch in particular spent most of her history as an Avengers. They also seem to have the rights to Madame Hydra do to her frequent use in Wolverine stories. If that's the case I have to imagine Spider Woman likely falls under Sony's umbrella of characters since despite having little connection, she is still a derivative work of Spider-Man.

Depends what you mean by derivative...are you sure Marvel couldn't use SW or Quicksilver? I know they couldn't mention Magneto, but those two are really not X-men characters, and I'm not sure you can copy write the concept of mutants. Spider-Woman has nothing to do with Spider-Man, other than capitalizing on the name similarity. If there is a problem they could just go with her original name "Arachne" and be done with it. Still, I agree that she probably won't be appearing anytime too soon in an Avengers film. Now maybe the S.H.I.E.L.D. tv series...

I've heard that Marvel Studios/Disney could use Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, but they couldn't mention their father is Magneto or that they are mutants as those are considered elements of the X-men and therefore belong to Fox. And because Deadpool is tangential connected to the X-men, that means he's theirs too.

Another weird thing was in the Daredevil film they were able to use the character of Ben Urich, but they had to say he worked for a different newspaper as the Daily Bugle is part of the Spider-man copyright.

She'll probably be in Ant-Man or Avengers 2. Joss Whedon likes her and has said she was in the script for the first Avengers movie before she got cut.
