Deadline is reporting that Marvel's TV division is in talks with ABC and ABC Studios about developing a drama series set in the world of The Avengers.
The site says: "I hear that the connection to the Avengers franchise would be light as the project is expected to be set in the universe and feature some of its themes and feel but may not include any characters from Joss Whedon’s blockbuster. I hear the project is in a nascent stage, described as “a kernel of an idea,” with a number of scenarios explored, including a high-concept cop show."
Guillermo del Toro recently said that he was still working with ABC on a new "Hulk" series as well and that they were "waiting on a particular writer to do a rewrite on the pilot."

So what are we talking about? "The Adventures Of Jarvis The Butler?"
Clearly Disney wants to exploit the Marvel properties, but is hesitant at the cost-per-episode that an effects-fest would entail. So they and their ABC underlings are probably trying to get a show that can grab the public's attention without being cost-prohibitive. As I always say, depends on the writing.

A proper Nick Fury tv series? Phil Coulson's own show?

They said it's likely going to be set in the same universe, not an outright Avengers TV show. There's no way they could make an Avengers show work given the budget constraints. There are a number of avengers or related characters. We could be getting something like the Heroes For Hire or one of Marvel's street-level teams or heroes that could actually be done on a network television dime.

If they wanted to do something like this they should just have an Agents of SHIELD TV show. Then you can showcase a badass spy team consisting of Dum Dum Dugan, Jimmy Woo, Bobbi Morse, Sharon Carter, and Clay Quartermain. It would center around regular people dealing with the aftermath of an alien invasion, advanced technologies and a resurgence of HYDRA from the Cap movie. That would rock.
