Based on the fact that xander still got 2 eyes i think it is a sort of reboot to let younger generations to know buffy.
The comics after the serie got the season numer in there name like: buffy season 9

Oh for Sarah Michelle Gellar to have one more crack at playing Buffy, a shame it will never happen. She looks great and would be fantastic to see one more Buffy live action.

Found a new treatment in the new issue(found it by acident)
In issue 10 Cordelia get captured by some messed up kid.
She is shown tied up and gagged, when she get rescured she first get her legs untied,
then ungagged but her hands stay tied until the end of the comic.
