DC's Ame-Comi Girls

Not sure if this balances out the un-sexifying of DC heroines like Power Girl among others...

While DC's familiar female characters are clearly wearing a whole new wardrobe in the new Ame-Comi Girls comics, they're also being marketed with a whole new approach.

Beginning in May, Ame-Comi Girls, based on the popular manga-inspired collectibles DC has been selling the past few years, will be released as a weekly series every Monday. That release schedule breaks the traditional release schedule of American superhero comics, which normally come out monthly on Wednesdays...

...In the new series, the heroines must unite to stop an invasion by the female Brainiac, who is aided by a group of “bad girl” super villains. Initially, there will be five individual character arcs with multiple chapters, leading up to a united, Ame-Comi Girls series.

UN-sexifying? Nearly every reboot has had on panel sex so far in the New 52. XD
Ame-Comi Robin is a real cutie.

That is good to know.

Too bad the new costumes suck, but still that is good to know.

I really don't see whats so bad about it :O I mean its not as good as the original so I can see the superfluousness of it but its still super-heroine-y.

Regardless this Ame-Comi news is nice. Batgirl/Robin coupling shall hit DA pretty soon I imagine. :P

The ironic thing about these AmeComi series designs is that they're largely not Japanese designs. Most of them have been designed by other comic artists from all over. For instance, the Robin design was made by Elsevilla, who's from Mexico. It always struck me as a little odd that they were marketed as if they were designs straight from Japan, with the AmeComi title and everything. The marketing was just weird.

Also, the new designs are on a very basic level okay, but they break a lot of artistic rules so they look ugly. Floating pieces of color, unattached eye lines that lead off into nowhere, conflicting geometry styles, etc. I don't mind Powergirl's new outfit design for instance, but there's parts of it that are just stupid. Ringlet coker that doesn't match anything else in her outfit, floating bands of blue in a sea of white, harsh angles that don't match her body geometry. Things that I would expect a professional comic maker to avoid.

Actually I think the main problem with Power GIrls new look is that it doesn't look like a finished design.
The very basic look coupled with the rather random logo etc makes it seem to me more of a rough design seen on a sheet of concepts along with other different looks, it sems quickly designed with no feeling put into it and drawn by someone who doesn't care about PG.

Its like a staff member walked by, knocked the design off the table and mistook it as being the one to go with.

I much prefer the look which was a slightly "tuned up" look of her classic design which was used in the Amanda Conner drawn PG series from not too long ago (until the staff was changed)

Consider the other version of PowerGirl's outfit from the DC reboot. The "Prime" PowerGirl design. That one was much worse than this one, if you want to evoke a similarity to her previous iconic aesthetic. At least this one visually reads as PowerGirl from it's simple color design and emphasis on the basic geometric elements of her original outfit. Circular element over her chest, blue socked limbs, long lanky leg design and asymmetrical shoulder design.

Now check it against this version:
http://maidofmight.net/2012/02/power-gi ... 2-costume/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Now you have an angular design on her chest, which she never had, a symmetrical design over her shoulder area, and her color palette is completely wrong. None of it reads as PowerGirl anymore. Between the two, at least the newest version actually still reads roughly the same at a glance. I hate a lot of the new DC 52 designs, but I think it's important to understand and analyze exactly *why* we don't like them. It's very easy for the casual fan to say "Beh! It's stupid." without even really understanding how good design factors into costumes.

For instance. Look at the AmeComi PG's leggings. Her knees look wonky. But why? There's a lot of difference cutouts on her design, a lot of circles too. But it still stands out. Knowing *why* means it's easier for us (and the pros) to know how to fix those problems.

So if I'm reading this correctly, this series is digital-only and won't appear as a paper copy (barring a possible trade collection)?

As to the looks, Supergirl is a little exhibitionist for my tastes, but the rest are legitimate variants I'd just have to get used to.
Catwoman: Think you can handle me?
Batman: I've got handcuffs.
Catwoman: Ooh.
