Awhile ago I read a very interesting article about a possible reason that the stuff Lucas did in connection to Star Wars started to get so horrible. He divorced his wife, who not only was one of the major editors for the films, but one of the few people Lucas would creatively listen to.

It's important to remember that Movie's aren't just the product of one persons mind. They're the product of hundreds, if not thousands of peoples labor. Even if most of them aren't involved in the creative process, you'll often find it's not just one superman behind everything. The problem with Star Wars prequels is that unlike the original trilogy, where Lucas had the creative talents of many people helping to forge his universe, he was in complete and total control. So he got to do his vision without interference...and it wasn't very good.
