Scooby-Doo: Fat-Shaming You?

Scooby-Doo has never been exactly the most educational kids show, but the franchise's latest straight-to-video release, Scooby-Doo! Frankencreepy, delivers a really poor message for viewers.

A clip for the movie depicts Daphne as the victim of a curse, and the subsequent loss of what she holds "most dear," which in her case, happens to be her looks. As a result of the curse, Daphne is transformed into an overweight version of herself — from a size 2 to a size 8, according to The Huffington Post, though the animation makes her look much, much larger — and she's absolutely horrified over the fact.

However, Warner Bros., the studio behind the movie, claims the film's story is actually positive. "All of our content is run through Standards and Practices, and there is always sensitivity to obesity and self image, especially when it comes to programming made for children and a family audience," Warner Bros. said in a statement to The Huffington Post. "Although you are correct that Daphne becomes bigger in the course of the story, the message is actually a much more positive one. ... While Daphne is at first upset by the sudden change, there is a touching moment where Fred points out that he didn't even notice a change and that she always looks great to him. At the end, when Velma explains how they figured out the mystery, she points out that the curse actually didn'ttake away what means the most to each of them: their friendship. The loss of Daphne's regular appearance is proven to be a superficial thing, and not what actually matters the most to her."

Heard about this. It's asinine. Guess what? Daphne's a vain CHARACTER. Fucking deal with it. Were this a pretty boy character going through the same goofy curse (which has been done many times and even in Scooby Doo) no one would bitch.

Suicide's right. Plus the Daphne story is based on Stephen King's story Thinner, about a fat man who kills a gypsy girl and her father puts a curse on him to make him thinner with horror results.

If you want to see a decent episode dealing with this, see the Disney Doug episode where Patti tries to lose weight the dangerous way. Another one is the Daria episode "Fat Like Me."

Touchy subject though it may be, what else can you do? If the transformation is too subtle, then it wouldn't have been an issue to be horrified over. Also, as has been said, she is a fictional cartoon character, meaning any representation is less than realistically portrayed. Further, if you're going to make something comical you shouldn't have to go overboard on censoring a subject matter. You can argue and say they could have just made her uglier without the weight gain, sure, but then why should they go so far as to depict ugly people in an uncouth manner? :rolls:

At the end of the day there just isn't pleasing anybody; if you're going to laugh at others then don't be afraid to laugh at yourself too. :P

And I thought the fat Clover (Totally Spies: Pretty Patties) was weird.
