Godzilla Sequel in 2018

Post by ARNie »

A bit of a lengthy wait, hopefully it'll be worth it...

Godzilla 2" is set to cut a path of destruction back to theaters — but not until June 8, 2018, Warner Bros. and producer-financier Legendary announced Thursday.

Director Gareth Edwards, whose "Godzilla" reboot opened to $93.2 million in May and has grossed more than $500 million at the worldwide box office, is returning to helm the sequel. The filmmaker, whose stock has risen quickly in recent months, will roll up his sleeves on the follow-up after he wraps a stand-alone "Star Wars" movie that's set for release in December 2016.

During a presentation at Comic-Con last month, Legendary revealed that "Godzilla 2" will feature three more iconic monsters from the Toho canon: Rodan, Mothra and Ghidorah.

Four years is an unusually long time to wait after a hit movie, but Warners apparently likes Edwards enough to stand by as he works on "Star Wars," and also has a rather crowded slate in the summers ahead besides.

Indeed, the announcement follows Warner Bros'. staking its claim to nine dates through 2020 for yet-untitled superhero movies based on DC Comics properties.

Legendary also recently announced "Skull Island," a prequel to "King Kong" that's set for release Nov. 4, 2016.
