Spider-Man spinoff will feature a female hero

Post by Bill K. »

"Spider-Man is returning for another outing in 2017 – but this time with a female-lead.

Marvel and Sony are reportedly working together on the spin-off film, which hasn’t yet decided which female will be its heroine.

According to Deadline, they’re mulling over either Spider-Woman, Spider-Girl, Stunner, Firestar, Black Cat or Silver Sable.

And not only will it have a female-lead, it will also have a female scriptwriter, with Lisa Joy stepping in to man the ship, while Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will be the producers. Amazing Spider-Man 3 has now been pushed back to 2018."

While Spider Woman would be the logical choice, and is already being assumed by E!, I'd be more interested in a Black Cat film. I imagine it will be whomever appears in the Sinister Six film.
Catwoman: Think you can handle me?
Batman: I've got handcuffs.
Catwoman: Ooh.

I imagine it will be Spider-Woman and Black Cat will be one of the lead in the Sinister Six movie. It'll be funny if Sony beats both Marvel and DC to getting a female superhero movie out.

Which I'm all for. Peter Parker bores me to tears at this point so thankfully they're shaking things up a bit.

There was also Red Sonjia, Elektra and Catwoman. Sure the films sucked but they still count

If anyone doesn't know, Spider-Woman/Jessica Drew started out as a villainess under HYDRA. It's possible that she could appear. But... seeing that she started out as a HYDRA member, I dunno if she'd be starting out as a member of Spidey's Rogue Gallery.

Plus Black Cat is probably a lot more well known, and maybe they can find a way to redeem how they screwed up in Catwoman in terms of 'cat-based superheroine'.

Well if it is Spider Woman, the film wouldn't be able to use any of her old connections to HYDRA, because the HYDRA plotlines are being produced in Marvel/Paramount films and the Spider-Man series is being produced by Sony Pictures. So for the same reason Spider-Man can't appear in an Avengers film, HYDRA can't appear in a Spider-Man film.

I agree, I would prefer to see Spider-Womnan in an Avengers film. Is she off limits to Marvel? I mean she really has no connection to Peter Parker besides the name.

That didn't stop Peter to appear in Jessica's early runs. In fact, it was Peter's advice to use her powers for good that Jessica started to consider becoming a force of good rather than a confused superhero trying to find her place. There IS a connection, albeit a bit small.

I don't believe Spider Woman is contractually off limits to The Avengers' films, but the name similarity might cause Sony to get their lawyers going and Marvel or Paramount might not want their series tied up in litigation. Just to play it safe, they may leave Spider Woman to Sony. And if Sony does come out with a Spider Woman film, then that will seal the deal against her appearing in The Avengers.
