Legend of Korra: Book Three Failing?

Post by ARNie »

It was only a matter of time…

Since its June 27 premiere, The Legend of Korra has been troubled with low ratings. From as high as 1.5 million on the first episode to as low as 1.1 million on the fourth and fifth episodes, it was only a matter of time before episodes were either rescheduled or pulled completely.

Now, the network has started pulling the episodes completely. After seven new episodes of Book Three’s 13 have aired, Nick has pulled one episode from this Friday as well as all four episodes from August 1 and 8.

Episode 8 “The Terror Within” is still airing this Friday at 8 p.m. (ET/PT).

No word on when (or where) the remaining five episodes will air. With a Comic-Con panel this Friday, we’ll likely find out pretty soon.

I still blame Shyamalan's live-action film for permanently tainting the franchise's chances of acceptance with the general public...anyway, how does this make you feel?

Put it on Saturday nights, now that Sam and Cat is cancelled. Second, when is Nick going to bring back Winx Club and put it in a better time slot than 1 PM on Sundays?

A-fucking-men. This has wreaked of sabotage from day one. The Korra FACEBOOK page made the air date announcement 3 days before Nickelodeon decided to finally advertise it in their marketing. Cramming out episodes as fast as possible with little to no hype or social media behind it. Disgraceful.

Sounds like we're getting a 'Netflix' situation.

If you guys want a person to blame for this blame me. I never saw anything from this franchise beyond the Shyamalan movie.

I don't think it's lack of advertising. I only heard about Avatar from podcasts. I never actually saw an episode on TV. I don't think it's the MN Shamalame film either as so few people went to see it. Plus I don't think people who liked the original series would be turned off Korra because of a poor adaption of that series.

I think the problem is that the writing on Korra isn't very good as compared with Avatar.

You can blame the quality all you want but the main reason (I believe) this show has dipped in ratings is it moving from a prime Saturday morning spot to a near death toll air time of Friday evening in season 2. And this season hit an even bigger snag with a rushed release date because of the Mexican branch accidentally releasing 5 episodes online for viewing. This show has not been handled well since season 1.

EDIT: Apparently they had originally not planned on rushing these episodes out and even had an SDCC marketing plan in place. But then they all rushed to distribution because of the episode leaks and fan trailers that resulted from the online debacle.

A great article on it on Forbes:

And as it seems it turns out the Korra online numbers are simply insanely huge and trump even the Season 1 TV numbers as stated by the creators at SDCC. It seems this is just a big changing of the tides since Nick can't seem to find a decent spot for it on the Network. A changing of the tides. But not to worry as season 4 is still ordered and still planned.

From everyone I know that used to watch the show, and there's a reason why I say "used to", they actually point the blame at Season 2.

All but one person I know stopped watching after the first four episodes of Season 2; why? All I could get them to say was, "stupid choices made that were out of character and done for the sake of plot." They hated Korra's entire behavior in the episodes they watched during Season 2; they felt it was entirely out of character and, to quote them, "one bad choice after another" made them stop caring and drop the show entirely. So, by the time Season 3 came around, they no longer cared; the damage had been done and there was nothing they could do to fix it.

Is this fair on their part? I don't think so myself; mostly because they gave up after four episodes (I'm guessing on this number, but I know they didn't get past episode 5). I think another part of this is that they were expecting Korra to be on the same level (for them) as Avatar. At the end of Season 1, they were all pumped and stoked. Then they said that Season 2 had let them down horribly.

I really wish I could give more of an analysis than that, but I'm just given the same responses whenever I try to bring it up.
