Kerry Drake: Cotton-Wool Cowboy (or, It's me! RickMontana!?)

Post by RickMontana »

Hello World

This is both a presentation of my favorite scene of all time, and of me. My nick is RickMontana and I am a part-time artist who discovered an obsession with gags and abductions at an early age, primarily out of B&W detective-comics. My avatar is handdrawn and colored by me. I have a very Disney-like style. I have my own gallery but it's a bit hardcore for this website. If you want to find it you may look for my name over at Hentai-Foundry. I enjoy gag-scenes in all sorts of media and collected stuff for quite awhile, including making scans of my own. I am a gag-snob so I apologize to fans of KO' and danger that I do not always scan these.

I wanted to share to you a story about the comic that had the strongest impact on me. When I was young there was a particular magazine that I got out of my father’s collection that I got so obsessed with that I even begun redrawing scenes from it. Eventually my concerned mom threw it out. Over time my memory faded. I forgot its name and I could only remember vague glimpses of its content; a black and white detective comic with a story involving two gagged ladies, a criminal and a deadly hairdryer.

Two-three years back I decided to make my best effort to find it again, even if I knew that it might be really disappointing (nostalgia plays tricks on you, now when I seen so many comics and cartoons, the one that started it all might turn out to be really disappointing 30 years later). But I knew if I got my eyes on it again I would recognize it immediately. I downloaded collections of detective comics from the web, such as Rip Kirby and Modesty Blaise. Then I begun buying collections, including Agent Corrigan X-9 and James Bond. I found tons of great DiD-scenes but not the particular one I was looking for. So I took it to the next stage...

I had a hunch that the scene would be in one out of two long-running detective magazines (the kind of magazine that put many different comics into one). So I visited a few web-antiquaries for comic collectors and bought over 500 magazines from the 60’ies up to the 80’ies. Then I begun browsing them through one by one (actually keeping an index of all DiD scenes I found on paper). This took me a long time because I was studying hard at the same time. Then one day I turned the page in one of them and my blood instantly boiled. There it was. And it was GLORIOUS! Not only was it better than I had expected it to be. Even today this scene remains as one of the longest and most iconic DiD stories I ever seen.

So thanks for reading. You will find my scans of the comic that started it all for me below.

I have the whole comic (18 pages) on the drive. The trouble is that it's in Swedish. Considering my history with it I have been thinking about translating it but not this month. If you want it as it is let me know.

Since Erikson had problems with my other uploads I uploaded these to http://postimg.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; that been reliable to me so far. It even auto-generate a forum post with pre-made thumbnails. Only problem is that you do not get an easy download.

This is Kerry Drake "I Maffians Våld" which roughly means "In the Clutches of the Mafia" (literally: "In the Violence of the Mafia"). Apparently the comic was published in Australia under the name "Cotton-Wool Cowboy" which might be the official English title. Its probably drawn sometime during the 60'ies. This is after Kerry Drake marry with Mindy (1957) meaning that the available reprints from SPEC Productions and most American magazines do not include this one. It's scanned from the Swedish defunct magazine "Seriemagasinet" #2 1980. The cover was made for another comic so numbering begins at page 3.

In summary the Cowboy TV-Star Colt Sadler comes to town. He request the police to find his stolen wallet but Kerry Drake believes its a publicity stunt. In truth he have accidentally hired the mafia to protect him who now hold him prisoner. In an attempt to flee he manages to get a call to his girlfriend Bridget Barlow who come to town. He act very strange to her but manage to give her a bullet that contains a message that ask her to get help. Kerry Drake continues to believe it's a PR-stunt but Mindy Drake decide to help Bridget Barlow to rescue Colt Sadler. The rescue attempt go horribly wrong and they are held by the mafia too. The mafia decide to get rid of them by staging an accident with an electrified hairdryer. In the final moment they are rescued by Kerry Drake. The end.

Australian cover from AusReprints.

The cell that fascinated me the most when I was a child was the 3rd one in this image. You can clearly see the contours of her mouth in that one. That's not really how textiles behave, is it? But even if it doesn't fit, it looks great. I do believe it's intended to be an ordinary detective OTM gag though.

A bit confusing to have my presentation in the scans section but if that rocks your boat I am fine. ;) I will upload some more Kerry Drake scenes at a later time. There's at least one more lengthy one but not this long.
