Not 'Fantsastic Four' in Fantastic Four reboot

Post by ARNie »

Guess they have to (re)start somewhere...

During an interview with IGN, X-Men: Days of Future Past and Fanastic Four writer/producer Simon Kinberg revealed yet more pieces of information likely to make comic book fans recoil away from the upcoming reboot of Marvel’s First Family.

When star Kate Mara made her earlier comments that she isn’t even sure there were superhero costumes, per se, in Fantastic Four, most fans took for granted that, ultimately, there would of course be some kind of costumes and that she was either trying to maintain the surprise or else unclear on certain elements of the movie since they hadn’t yet started shooting.

Kinberg, though, told IGN that the group’s identity will not be fully forged by the end of the film — that they won’t be “celebrity superheroes” and, in fact, will not even be called the Fantastic Four on film.

“This Fantastic Four movie is in some ways a reboot and in other ways just a stand-alone origin story. By the end of the movie, we don’t call them the Fantastic Four, they’re not celebrity superheroes. The tone of the movie is much more grounded and real and gritty — more in the direction of Chronicle than in the direction of the original Fantastic Four movies.”

He said it’s the story of how five people go from being normal people to being transformed into something superhuman, and that they’re drawing “some” from Ultimate Fantastic Four and some from throughout the property’s history.

The rest of the article, which also brings up the notion of an X-Men/FF crossover, is at comicbook.com

"...five people go from being normal . . ."?
Are they taking Crystal along? Jennifer Walters? Franklin? Norrin Radd? The family dog? Wouldn't that make them the Fantastic Five? Or are they going to shoehorn Victor Von Doom on the flight and he goes rogue on them?

Not to sound sacrilegious or anything, but is the Fantastic Four as a concept even relevant anymore? It's sort of like Captain Marvel (the red one with the lightning bolt) or the Blackhawks. It worked in its heyday, but it doesn't work as well today.

Any story can be updated to fit the times. The aspect of exploration and scientific discovery will always be relevant and thus the basis of their origin and adventures can always be re-imagined. I just wish ONE movie could get that right... guess we'll have to wait and see if this one tanks and hopefully it can drop the license to Marvel Studios in a like 10 fucking years...

THis reminds me of the 90s Flash live action series. The network didn't want Barry Allen to wear a costume, and the creators told them without the costume he is the bionic man. They let them have the costume. I don't mind an origin story that takes a full movie to reach the status quo (Man of Steel did that, and I loved that film), but not having the FF in their outfits kind of negates them being the FF. YOu at least need the suits. Eitherway, will depend on the quality of the film...I'll wait and see if this looks lke anything I'll want to see in the theatres.

I don't mind the "no costumes" part. They didn't have costumes in the first issue. Stan and Jack weren't going to give them costumes, but Martin Goodman insisted. The Fantastic Four have never really been "costume dependent". My biggest fear is the usual Hollywood attitude of "We've licensed this popular property - - now let's change everything and show them how much 'better' we can make it."

Agreed. Kinda defeats the purpose of the 'Fantastic' part of the name and the nature of the property.

How should they look then? Be in street clothes? I'm not saying they have to have a dopey 4 on their chests but at least have the jumpsuits.

Stan never really got into explaining that part. Given that Kirby was recycling a lot of "Challengers of the Unknown" into Fantastic Four, he may have given them jumpsuits without them being form-fitting.

If you license a property you at least need to use the established iconography of said property. Otherwise it feels quite pointless.

It's worth noting nobody ever said they're not doing costumes. By the nature of the story they'd have to wear some sort of special outfits to avoid Johnny and Reed ending up butt naked whenever they're done using their powers. Bryan Hitch, a comic artist who has worked on the Fantastic Four and the Ultimate Avengers, is even doing costume designs for the movie. http://www.bleedingcool.com/2014/04/08/ ... our-movie/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The confusion seems to stem from a very early interview with the woman playing Susan Storm where she said she didn't know if she was going to be wearing a costume or not. This reminds me of a few months ago when someone made a thread about how Ultron is supposedly not a robot in the Avengers sequel even though he clearly is and they were looking at an out of context quote.
