Amazing Spider-Man 4: Passing The Torch?

Post by ARNie »

At least it would be a better approach than making a deal with Mephisto...

...Andrew Garfield will certainly return for ASM3, he may not return for ASM4 – and the same goes for director Marc Webb. Could The Amazing Spider-Man 4 see Peter Parker recast, a la James Bond? Or could the mantle of Spider-Man get passed to a new character within the universe?

Garfield was recently asked by Comic Book Resources if Miles Morales – the current iteration of Ultimate Spider-Man in the comics – could be introduced to the Amazing Spider-Man universe. Here’s what Garfield had to say:

I have given that thought. I think one of the amazing things about Spider-Man is that you don’t see skin color when he’s in the suit. You don’t see any religious beliefs. You don’t see any denominations. Everyone can project themselves into that suit. It’s incredibly powerful in that way. So of course I think it’s important that the openness, the casting, in terms of who could be Spider-Man, could be absolutely anyone. A hero is a hero, whether you’re a man, woman, gay, lesbian, straight, black, white or red all over – it doesn’t matter.

Miles Morales was a huge moment in this character’s comic book life. And I do believe that we can do that. It’s something I’m really interested in figuring out; an eloquent way of coexisting, or passing on the torch. I don’t have an answer, but I think it’s actually a really important move. I think it’s a really beautiful and important move.

I hope not...I won't be watching anymore Spidey films without Parker in the role.

So by the logic of the article Spider-Man is not actually a character, just a suite and a power set. If Peter Parker gets murdered by the Green Goblin in ASM 4 I will not be watching it or any sequels.

Meh. We've had what, five movies with Peter Parker now? Six soon. I can safely say I've had my fill of Peter Parker. Viva Miles!

We've had four films, soon five, with Tony Stark. Should we kill him off to and put just "some guy" in the Iron Man armour.

I have to agree with Erikson. It's not like with Green Lantern or Flash where multiple characters can put on the costume, it works for them but with Spidey it doesn't. Peter Parker is Spider-Man, the same way Clark Kent is Superman. The person behind the mask is as important as the costume. I did give the new Spidey a try in Ultimate Comics but it just wasn't the same.
