Well, like the article said, Superman is probably going to have a new costume and origin for the near future. And a new girlfriend in all likelihood.

But it will be interesting to see how the public responds to this. Superman's origins are so ingrained in the public's mind that I don't know if they'll accept a new one. It would be like trying to palm off Tarzan as an alien or Sherlock Holmes as a cybernetic android. And then where will Warner Communications be?

Stuck paying the Siegels, just like they could have done ten years ago when the copyright was first challenged.

As for the movie, they can ignore the origin and Krypton and jump right into action, but if they use the costume, the Clark Kent identity or Lois, they'll have to negotiate a fee payment with the Siegel estate. I'm not certain how Shuster got into this. He wasn't part of the original copyright challenge and I didn't know he had any immediate family.
Catwoman: Think you can handle me?
Batman: I've got handcuffs.
Catwoman: Ooh.

people keep citing the re-launch, but Lois is still in the series, the marriage has just been removed. If Lois becomes off limits to them then they couldn't use her at all. Also the Krypton origins are still intact. I doubt DC would reboot the entire universe just for this. I assume eventually WB/DC will come to some kind of settlement because a dismembered unrecognizable Superman will have no market value to the families or DC.

I'm just going to come right out and say it.

I think it's fucking stupid that this shit is happening. Shuster and Siegel sold the copyrights ages ago. And yes DC made a dick move by not pumping any money into Superman until after they owned it but that's what corporations do. And wasn't it DC that invented the flying part? As I recall "The Origin" he could leap a building blah blah blah. But not fly. How the fuck do they own that? This is what happens when you cry and bitch your way for shit that isn't yours any more. The estate had shit to do with any of the creation anyway and they want to milk it for all it's worth. Kill the bastard and come up with new ideas. Before you know it they won't be able to use the letter "S" unless it's attached to an actual word (No need to bring up Marvel trying to copyright the letter "X").

So, the family owns basically the stuff introduced in Action Comics #1 while DC gets everything that came afterward? That's just fucking stupid to the maxium degree.

I doubt the relaunch has a relation to this; they still have the basic backstory, suit, Clark and Lois. Why did they bother to go to the trouble of this if we're still seeing what we're kind of used to by now? I know the cash cow of Supes is a big thing in this but seriously? What was the fucking point!?

Copyright law allows the original authors to reclaim the copyright on a work at first renewal if it isn't classified as a "work made for hire". That's all the Siegel family did ten years ago: attempt to claim what the law allowed them to claim. All Time-Warner had to do back then was negotiate a rights fee or a profit-sharing percentage back then and none of this would have happened. But Time-Warner decided instead to engage in a protracted suit hoping the plaintiff would either die off or run out of money. And now Time-Warner has this situation. It's the result of simple corporate greed.

It's greed on both sides. There's enough shitty people to go around for every side.

If you want a great story look up Tim Langdell.
For years he's been getting money from sueing numerous people over the use of the word "edge" (due to his - ahem - company Edge Games)

Ever wonder why Sould Edge was called Soul Blade when it came out on Playstation? that was his doing.

Anyway lately people have been finding out about him and psssing on information to each other so he'll lose in court and also lose his "ownership" of the whole edge name.

Greed may be disgusting, but Karma's a bitch! :D
