Edited Justice League Unlimited on CW

Post by ARNie »

Just a random distraction, found out that CW does have a Saturday Morning program block called Vortex, however the local affiliate syndicates it very early like now Monday 1 am. I didn't know about it until zapping to CW right about now.

Anyway, aside from rerunning Yugioh-whatever series this is and Transformers Prime, they're also rerunning Justice League Unlimited. Just caught the pilot episode Initiation, however what did catch my attention and rifling through my dvd set of the series was the beginning scene where Green Arrow stops a robbery, in this CW version the sound effects of the armed robber's weapons had been changed from gunfire to laser sounds, and they even deleted a scene where one thug unsuccessfully tries to dissuade his fellow henchman from attempting to shoot a clerk before Arrow breaks things up.

I suppose the edits are because of the times being what they are, but still I found the censoring both startling since I remember how it originally aired, and a little unsettling over the notion that the changes were a necessary protection.

Feel free to look for it yourself on your local CW channels if you want, this was just a sudden observation since I had stumbled upon the edited rerun, though it does make me wonder what else of the series had been changed for 'today's viewing.'

Tiny Toon Adventures did have some edits when they were on Fox:

The whole cult scene from The Acme Bowl episode was removed
The Bicycle Salesmen eats a bucket of Scorpions twice was edited

the 90's Spider-Man cartoon had to tone down The Punisher, since he can't kill people in the cartoon, but Frank's cameo in X-Men did shoot bullets.

Speaking of X-Men: The opening to Days Of Future Past was edited out due to the destroyed World Trade Center, years before 9/11 hit us.

Look at the classic Looney Tunes shorts that had to be edited for kids, like smoking, suicide, black face, and other things.

Thanks goodness for uncut DVDs

Back again.

Ack, was so busy doing the first scene comparison and writing this up that I missed the middle part of that episode, did remember about it after I had switched off the computer and did catch the the end.

And yes, there was one more edit at the scene where Green Arrow decides to stay because Black Canary caught his eye, they cut out the panning scene of Canary slipping on her boots which was followed by Arrow obviously ogling her.

It's mainly because of the time-slot I imagine. The JLU original run was in Primetime. You can get away with a quite a bit more than Saturday mornings. But yes the gun thing is typical whenever it's in the recent news. I remember when Disney XD (before it was called that) was airing Gargoyle re-runs and they never aired the episode where Elisa was shot and they deliberately zoomed the camera in on a few shots of Elisa to hide her loading a clip into her glock.
